I am yet another ex player with Yeovil Workmen's just like the guy who is now in the states, under the baton as I remember of TIM Osborne (his son Terry was a mate of mine). A useful (or otherwise) snippet for your History is that one practice night we were playing away when we received a lot of visitors. In a nut shell they invited us to form a TA military band which we did. We all received new instruments (brand new) new uniforms (my Mother used to use the epaulets to scour her saucepans) and one extra practice a week for which we were paid. Some of Yeovil Town band also joined us, maybe that was the start of getting back together again of the two bands. Tim became bandmaster warrant officer and we all became part of the 255 medium regiment Royal Artillery TA meeting at Houndstone Camp (where my Father was the Association Barman).

We as Yeovil Band would play a Saturday afternoon concert at the Sydney Gardens and charge a fee of £7.50. the very same band, same program, different uniform would play the same venue on the Sunday as the TA band and receive a fee of 60 guineas.

Good to see your success and nice to know that I was once part of that band.

Hi to all

I have just discovered your web site and it brought back some fantastic memories.

My first introduction to music was with the Yeovil Salvation Army band on cornet and then euphonium. I later joined the Yeovil Workmans Silver Band at the tender age of 11, under the baton of Arthur Osbourne in 1952. Apart from Arthur the only memorable characters that I can remember in the band were Ozzie Beaton (Bass) and Ken Gay (trombone). Ken's brother Gordon, though not a musician was an avid supporter of the band, rattling the collection boxes during Sunday afternoon concerts at Weymouth, West Bay, Lyme Regis etc.

When I joined, we rehearsed in an old building on Henford Rd?, we then moved to the Catholic church on Reckleford Rd, and then to the Labour Club near the town center.

In 1957 (at the tender age of 15) I joined the Band of Her Majesty's Royal Marines where I enjoyed a 27 year career playing euphonium, 'cello and trombone traveling around the world, including 8 years on the Royal Yacht Britannia, rising to the rank of Bandmaster. When on leave I would always attend band practice with the band who instilled the love of music in me. On retirement I moved to the USA in 1984 and taught music at a community college in Maryland. Earlier this year (2004) my wife and I moved to South Carolina where I met up with an ex RAF Central Band cornet player who is the leader of a local band "Festive Brass". He and I are franticly trying to convert our trumpet players to try the cornet!

I see the band has made great strides in the contesting world, congratulations and continuing success to you all.

Thanks for the memories and the continuing love of music which the Yeovil Town Band gave me.

Regards to all,

Ray Edwards.

Was a pleasure to meet most of the band at Mark & Claire's wedding. What a good crack ! you lot are definitely a friendly bunch. Thanks for making us feel so welcome. Will have to bring our instruments down next time we visit. Thought the ( Lurpack man ) did an excellent job of taking care of Mark & Claire throughout the day. You were a pleasure to listen to.
